About
While the Mercado da Ribeira (Time Out Market) has become a tourist institution and the Mercado de Campo de Ourique attracts Lisbon's affluent residents, Mercado de Arroios in the Intendente neighborhood remains genuinely working-class and untouched by gentrification. The market serves the diverse community around Praça do Intendente — one of Lisbon's most multicultural squares — and its food reflects that diversity.
The indoor hall contains traditional Portuguese produce vendors alongside African and Asian specialty food stalls. The lunch options — ranging from pão de queijo to grilled fish to Bangladeshi curry — are excellent value and genuinely local. The surrounding streets contain some of the best traditional tascas in Lisbon, serving lunch to workers at €7-8 for a full meal with wine. Take the Metro to Intendente station.
